My Story
Hello, I'm Sergio Ortiz. For the past 20 years, I have been training and fighting Muay Thai and MMA. I fell in love of Muay Thai at the young age of 15.
A couple years later, in 2010, I started amateur MMA.
I traveled to USA and competed in the July 2011 IKF World Classic Amateur Kickboxing & Muay Thai Championships in Orlando Florida, defeating Joe Merritt in the final for the title.
On April 28th, 2012 in Camp Verde (Arizona, USA) I defeated Cecil Tudor.
In 2013, after an intense fight, I won my Pro MMA debut by knocking out Jordan Reyes, a professional boxer from Nicaragua.
My professional Muay Thai career started at age 17 under Kru Daniel Wong, one of the pioneers of muay thai in Costa Rica.
During my career I had super challenging experiences such as facing a world champion in Boxing several times, Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga. Mayorga had fought against boxing legends such as Oscar de la Hoya, Félix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto among others.
I defeated him, with a unanimous decision. I was the first in my country of Costa Rica to win such a big fight. We had a rematch, and I submitted him with an armbar.
Shortly afterwards, I faced off against "the cocaine cowboy" and Miami's notorious street-fighting gangster Rene "Level" Martinez.
I love to give back to my country and the sport of MMA. I train and prepare at Pura Vida Jiu Jitsu school, founded by the renowned black belt Mestre Sydney Machado, who is also a veteran international MMA fighter. This is where I developed my fighting game and learned to be as versatile and complete in my skills as possible for mainstream world of MMA challenges.
In October 2015, I moved to Thailand to and through the tryouts process I earned the privilege of training at Tiger Muay Thai.
At Tiger Muay Thai, I was able to train with some of the best athletes in the world, including many champions from the biggest organizations in the world. To name a few but not limited to: Roger Huerta, Dave Leduc, Alexander Volkanovski, Petr Yan, Valentina Shevchenko, Top Noi, Tarek Suleiman, Emilio Urrutia.
In 2017 on the shores of Paradise Beach in Phuket Thailand I participated in Primal FC: Dark Moon Rising, representing Tiger Muay Thai in an Event Presented by UFC veteran Mike Swick.
I returned to Costa Rica in 2019, where I am currently passionate about building an International Fighter Community and spreading MMA culture in Central America. I will soon be launching a Podcast- stay tuned!
In 2021, I signed with Golden Management Team, with the support of my sponsors I traveled to Croatia and attended a training camp where I had the honor and opportunity to study under Renzo Gracie, Augusto Frota, Mirko Cro Cop, and Milivoj Bajic.
Later in 2021, I traveled to train Emilio "El chupacabra" Angulo, in Italy, Sardegna, at the Roger Gracie Academy which is led by the Black Belt Albert Diaz. Aside from getting in the cage myself, there's nothing I love more than supporting my students and seeing them succeed and conquer their dreams.
Currently, I’m in process of creating a top-level retreats and training camps all across Costa Rica.
I'm looking forward to continuing to travel & fight, conquer dreams, and of course, sharing what I love with dedicated students. I am always receptive to hearing about collaborative opportunities, sponsorships, and I am currently taking on private clients, however, space is limited.
